Hebrew Versions

A study of Hebrew Versions is important in any study of the Tetragrammaton in the New World Translation Christian Greek Scriptures. This is true because of the New World Bible Translation Committee's reliance on them in the translation process.

The New World Bible Translation Committee proposed two translation guidelines and a third hypothesis regarding the history of the early Christian congregations that, when combined, support the use of Jehovah in their Christian Scripture translation.

  1. Most importantly, they stated that quotations from the Hebrew Scriptures using the divine name guided their decision to use Jehovah in the Christian Scriptures for that same quotation.

  2. Secondly, they stated that God's name should be restored when it is found in Hebrew versions at a given verse.

  3. Finally, they stated that Jehovah should be restored because a purported heresy in the early Christian congregations resulted in the removal of the Tetragrammaton from the Christian Scripture writings.

About this Page

This page refers you to a wealth of information regarding both Hebrew versions themselves, and the the use of Hebrew versions in the translation process of the New World Translation Christian Greek Scriptures. Most of the material is taken from our published books found in the Downloadable Books section on this site. However, supplementary material has also been added where it is useful.

In general, the following links are arranged in order of complexity. The initial topics are introductory. Subsequent topics become more specific to individual issues and deal with more technical aspects of the Hebrew version subject.

When using the material which comes from other publishers or web sites, please remember that it is protected by their copyrights.

I. A General Introduction to Hebrew Versions:

The brochure What are Hebrew Versions? will give you a simple explanation of Hebrew versions and why they were used in the translation of the New World Translation Christian Scriptures.

This brief quotation from Appendix 1D of the New World Translation Reference Edition, 1984, pages 1564-1565 is the statement of the New World Bible Translation Committee regarding their use of Hebrew versions. Notice in the second paragraph that they say that they have "Looked for agreement from the Hebrew versions to confirm our rendering." (The page is copied from The Divine Name in the New World Translation, pages 4-5.) Also see Chapter 1 from the book The New World Translation and Hebrew Versions.

The New World Translation Bible Committee said, Quotations from the Hebrew Scriptures using the divine name will guide the decision to use Jehovah in the Christian Scriptures for that same quotation. This statement is evaluated in The Divine Name in the New World Translation, Chapter 6.

The second guideline used by the New World Translation Bible Committee can be summarized as saying, If a Hebrew version used יהוה, the New World Bible Translation Committee would restore Jehovah to that Christian Scripture passage. This statement is evaluated in The Divine Name in the New World Translation, Chapter 7.
